It appears that the inexpensive printers sold by the original manufacturers are loss leaders (like cheap cameras were in the earliest days, to promote selling film in a captive market). That is, perhaps they intend to make up the revenue in with ink sales downstream of the printer sales. One would hope that competition drives them to make substantial improvements in their own ink offerings rather than implementing software changes in the printer updates to shut out alternative suppliers.
